Are Your Cleaning Products Safe for Pets and Toddlers? What Every Parent and Pet Owner Should Know

If you share your home with toddlers, dogs, cats, or all three, chances are you've spent time childproofing cabinets, choosing healthy foods, and creating a safe environment for your family.

But there's one area many homeowners overlook: the cleaning products used throughout the home.

Young children and pets interact with their environment very differently than adults. Toddlers crawl across freshly cleaned floors, put toys and hands in their mouths, and frequently touch surfaces throughout the home. Pets walk across floors, groom their paws, and spend much of their time lying on carpets and furniture.

Because of these behaviors, residues left behind by certain cleaning products may lead to increased exposure for the smallest members of your household.

Why Children and Pets Are More Vulnerable

Children breathe more air relative to their body size than adults and frequently place objects and hands in their mouths. Pets are similarly vulnerable because they spend more time close to floors and often ingest substances while grooming.

Research has shown that some chemicals commonly found in household cleaning products can contribute to skin irritation, respiratory irritation, and other health concerns, particularly with repeated exposure or improper use.

Common Chemicals Found in Conventional Cleaning Products

1. Quaternary Ammonium Compounds ("Quats")

Quaternary ammonium compounds are frequently found in disinfectants, antibacterial sprays, and sanitizing wipes.

These chemicals are effective disinfectants, but they can also cause:

  • Skin irritation and dermatitis

  • Eye irritation

  • Respiratory irritation

  • Worsening asthma symptoms in sensitive individuals

Many antibacterial cleaners and disinfectants rely on quaternary ammonium compounds or phenolic chemicals as active ingredients. Health experts note that these ingredients may irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.

2. Fragrances and Phthalates

The word "fragrance" on a label can represent dozens or even hundreds of undisclosed chemicals.

Some fragrance ingredients may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can contribute to:

  • Headaches

  • Eye, nose, and throat irritation

  • Skin sensitivity

  • Respiratory irritation

Children, individuals with allergies, and pets may be especially sensitive to heavily fragranced products. Research has found that many cleaning products emit VOCs, which can irritate the respiratory system and contribute to poor indoor air quality.

3. Ammonia, Bleach, and Harsh Solvents

Common ingredients such as ammonia, chlorine bleach, and strong solvents are frequently used in oven cleaners, bathroom cleaners, glass cleaners, and disinfectants.

Exposure can occur through:

  • Direct skin contact

  • Inhalation of fumes

  • Accidental ingestion

  • Contact with surface residues

Health professionals warn that ammonia-based cleaners may irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat, while bleach and other corrosive cleaners can cause burns and poisoning if swallowed.

Can Cleaning Products Affect Skin Conditions?

For some people, yes.

Individuals with sensitive skin, eczema, allergies, or dermatitis may experience flare-ups after repeated exposure to harsh cleaning agents.

Symptoms can include:

  • Redness

  • Dryness

  • Itching

  • Rashes

  • Cracked skin

Pets may also develop skin irritation after walking across freshly cleaned floors or contacting residues left on surfaces. Veterinary experts report that exposure to certain cleaners can cause redness, irritation, rashes, and even chemical burns in severe cases.

Can Cleaning Chemicals End Up in Food?

Improper use of cleaning products can increase the risk of chemical residues contacting food.

For example:

Countertops

Food is frequently prepared directly on kitchen counters. If surfaces are cleaned with harsh chemicals and not thoroughly rinsed or allowed to dry according to label directions, residues may transfer to food.

Refrigerators

The inside of refrigerators comes into direct contact with produce, leftovers, and beverages. Using strong chemical cleaners inside food storage areas without proper rinsing may leave residues where food is stored.

Ovens

Commercial oven cleaners often contain highly alkaline chemicals designed to dissolve baked-on grease. If residues are not completely removed after cleaning, they may remain on cooking surfaces or racks.

While cleaning products are generally considered safe when used exactly as directed, experts recommend carefully following label instructions, rinsing food-contact surfaces when required, and avoiding unnecessary chemical use on surfaces that directly touch food.

Protecting Toddlers and Pets During Cleaning

A few simple habits can dramatically reduce exposure:

Choose safer products when possible.

Look for products that are:

  • Fragrance-free

  • Low-VOC

  • EPA Safer Choice certified

  • Non-toxic and residue-conscious

Keep children and pets away while cleaning.

Allow surfaces and floors to dry completely before reintroducing children or animals to the area.

Ventilate your home.

Open windows and use fans when cleaning to reduce indoor air pollutants.

Never mix cleaning products.

Mixing products such as bleach and ammonia can create toxic gases that are dangerous for both people and pets.

Store cleaners securely.

Always keep cleaning products in their original containers and out of reach of children and animals.
